ㅡ그 모진 날들을 등으로 버티며 사노라고 살았는디

   I've been living with those hard days on my back,

ㅡ그려도 이만허믄 느이 아버지 볼 낯은 되겄지,

   So I'll be glad to see your father,

 

그래서인가

어제보다 깊게

어머니의 꿈속은 죽음처럼 고요하고

펄펄했던 그 말씀도 숨소리 따라 잦아들고

That is why,

Deeper than yesterday,

My mother's dream is as quiet as death,

And that rousing remark dies down with the sound of breath,

 

눈감으면

이제는 모든 게 보여요 어머니

When I close my eyes, I see everything now, Mom

 

저 많은 세월 속에

눈물이 펑펑할 일만 남기고

둥둥 떠나는 당신의 모습이

In all those years,

Leaving me nothing but tears in my eyes,

The way you're leaving

 

이 자식은 어머니의 낯 설은 초행길을

길 닦는 인부처럼 보랏빛 등불로만 서성이다

My mother's strange first way,

Like a worker who leads the way,

This son wanders like a purple lamp,

 

어머니!

그리운 이름만 남기고 돌아서는,

Mother!
